Kenn Adams is a
professional playwright, performer, and teaching-artist,
with over 18 years of experience creating and performing
innovative theater for children and adults. As a playwright,
he is the author of more than a dozen plays and musicals
that have been produced from coast to coast. As a
professional improviser, he began his career in 1991 with
New York City's Freestyle Repertory Theater. He spent the
next ten years with Freestyle, teaching, creating and
performing improvisation. He is the inventor of the classic
short-form improv games "Sit, Stand and Kneel" and "Ding /
Buzz, or The Family Dinner". His career exploration into
dramatic structure and the art of long-form improvisation
has lead to his innovative method of improvising full-length
plays as well as his creation of the "The Story Spine", a
simple tool for understanding and practicing sound dramatic
structure that has been embraced by improvisers, school
teachers, and writers the world over. Much of his time
during the "Freestyle years" were spent as a professional
children's performer and teaching-artist, bringing assembly
performances and theater education, to kids in grades K-12,
all over New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Rochester.
After moving to California in 1999, he worked with the
innovative improv group, LILA Theater Company, and went on
to direct their Long-Form Narrative Conservatory Program. He
then spent three years as the Director of Education for the
East Bay's Willows Theater Company. With the Willows, he
brought low-cost, professional-calibur theater enrichment
programs to the under-served public schools in Contra Costa
County, in addition to directing their SummerStage Summer
Theater Conservatory. He created and hosted THE COMEDY
SMACKDOWN, the East Bay's Teen Improv-Comedy Tournament and
founded the adult improv-comedy group, WEEPING WILLOWS
IMPROVISATION.
Kenn lives in Lafayette with his beautiful daughter,
Heather, and his
sometimes-annoying-but-ultimately-very-lovable kitten,
Smokey. He is the author of the book How to Improvise a
Full-Length Play; The Art of Spontaneous Theater
(Allworth Press, 2007).
