That Sugar Film
Over the weekend I watched That Sugar Film. We’ve been following their social media feeds for a few months but I hadn’t yet seen the film. Whenever I start to watch a documentary I think: Will this keep my attention? Will it have a high production value? Will I feel smarter at the end, or will I think I’ve wasted my time? This film was fabulous! It kept my attention. It had a modern and fun production value. And I was definitely smarter after watching it! From the film’s website (link: http://thatsugarfilm.com ): That Sugar Film started as one man’s journey to discover the bitter truth about sugar. Damon Gameau embarked on a unique experiment to document the effects of a high sugar diet on a healthy body, consuming only foods that are commonly perceived, or promoted to be ‘healthy’.
One of the most impactful points Damon makes is during a segment on the effects of ‘Mountain Dew Mouth’. Damon follows the story of a kid named Larry who has devastatingly deteriorated teeth and oral hygiene because of his excessive consumption of Mountain Dew over his lifetime. What impacted me about Larry’s story is that he represents so many people who don’t realize the damage excess sugar is doing to their body. I personally didn’t realize all the excess sugar lurking around in my food until I started investigating.
As I read reviews on this film, both for and against it, lots of people have plenty to say. I liked this film because it reiterates what Kid Power teaches every day. We believe in selecting real food in moderate amounts. The message about being aware of what you’re putting in your body is Kid Power’s formula for feeling great. We do encourage you to watch the film and do your own investigating into where sugar is lurking in your diet. As the Sugar Sheriff says, “You gotta read the labels or you’re never, ever gonna know.”
